#176: Black Stallion
Excellent, beautifully made “kids and animals” movie that never dumbs itself down.  There are really two fully fleshed out films in this one movie.  The first is about a boy who becomes stranded on an island following a shipwreck that claims the life of his father.  He finds a beautiful, but thought to be untrainable stallion, who also survived and they depend on each other for safety and resources.  There is hardly any dialog, just beautiful, unspoken sequences between the boy and his horse.  The second “film” begins when the boy and the horse are rescued and a local horse trainer recognizes the horse’s talent and connection to the boy.  He trains them both to become racers.  Highly highly recommended.
